Integrating Reading into the Corequisite Learning Support Course
Miriam Moore, Assistant Professor of English, University of North Georgia
In this session, participants will discuss ways to support corequisite students in academic reading.  Three basic concepts frame the scaffolding activities we will discuss:

  1. Reading is a conversation.
  2. Readers enter the conversation by way of genre knowledge.
  3. Readers can learn to recognize and respond to genre-moves through close reading.

During the session, participants will identify a sequence of scaffolding activities to help struggling readers, based on these concepts.  Participants are encouraged to bring a favorite (or particularly difficult) reading assignment along for discussion!

During this session, we will discuss alignment of corequisite courses and pathway courses as well as alignment across different sections of the same courses. Participants will explore a concrete, schedule-based approach to ensuring the opportunity for “just-in-time” and targeted support regardless of corequisite alignment approach.
