Institutions across the University System of Georgia collect every year to share experiences, learn new strategies, and plan their work for student Momentum for the year ahead. The Momentum Summit V is an opportunity to review and refine the work institutions have committed to, assess progress, and chart a path forward for building upon success.

The overarching goal for the Summit is to support institutional teams in crafting concrete, ongoing plans for student success and Momentum by facilitating critical reflection, assessment, and evaluation of established areas of work, ongoing and emerging needs, and institutional priorities in the area of student success.  This work should building on existing practices, identify priority areas for improvement, create a larger community on campus to focus on student success work, and identifying the critical changes that are necessary to ensure students can navigate their way to their goals.

We are continuing with a "flipped" meeting approach this year, inlcuding:

  • an online "course" with pre-recorded presentations, resources and materials (log in here: https://usgtrain.view.usg.edu/),
  • discussion areas for sharing your thoughtss,
  • a week of virtual events for responding to the materials and presentations with peers,
  • a week set aside for structured campus planning, and
  • a Capstone event for campus teams to share their plans and learn from each other.

This design is intended to maximize opportunities for faculty and staff to participate and learn from one another, and honors our pledge that we would make the most of the time we have together for active, engaged conversations. Each participant will be enrolled in the Mometum Summit V course in MomentumU@USG, which will open in January 2023, and will be asked to engage with the material at their own pace in advance of the responsive sessions. During the sessions, participants will be able to engage with the presenters, hosts, and one another to dig deeper on the topics and share their experiences. 

And, of course, the centerpiece of the Summit is the dedicated time for structured planning on campus that leads to the development of a campus Momentum Plan.

Participation is not capped for the virtual Summit, so institutions may include as many individuals as they like to join us. Not every person will need to attend every session, but we encourage campuses to plan and structure participation to ensure that each unit on campus is represented at each session and that teams are able to share and engage during the designated team planning sessions to the greatest extent possible.

A NOTE ON OPEN FORUMS
For the open forums, participants will be join a main room where there will be very brief opening and orienting remarks, and then placed into small breakout rooms (~10 people) to engage in a structured conversation with peers. Breakouts will be about 35 minutes long, with a report out and reconnect following the session. Sessions are open to all and self-facilitated. If you would like to host a room on a specific topic of interest to you, we would love to have you join us.

Monday, February 20

Panel Discussion on Purpose and Practices

Institutions across the System are investing in practices and activities that serve to deepen student learning, connect to students' purpose, and support exploration. This session opens with a conversation about the student experience inside and outside the classroom through experiential learning and a relentless welcome approach, and offers an opportunity to dig deeper on the ways that these approaches can be adapted, adopted, and developed.

Open Forum on Purpose

How are you and your institution connecting to purpose. This Open forum invites you to connect with your peers from across the state on topics related to career connections, experiential learning, TILT (Transparency in Teaching and Learning) and other practices that helps students understand how what they are doing connects with their greater purpose for committing to college.

Open Forum on Practices

What are the practices you and your institution are exploring this year to deepen student learning, implement high impact practices, and advance teaching excellence. This Open forum invites you to connect with your peers from across the state on topics related to High Impact Practices, research and scholarship around teaching and learning, small teaching practices and other pedagogical approaches, and more.

Tuesday, February 21

Panel Discussion on Support and Engagement

Institutions support students in a variety of ways throughout their academic careers. This session will provide some perspective on two peer-led supplemental instruction programs as a launching point for a conversation about student supports and engagement more broadly.

Open Forum on Support

What supports are most effective on your campus? How are students using campus (and other) supports now to be successful? What non-academic supports do students need or use? This Open Forum provides an opportunity to connect, share, and engage on a wide range of student supports.

Open Forum on Engagement

Student engagement has made some dramatic transitions in the past few years. This Open Forum offers an opportunity to take stock and share your experiences with your peers on engagement inside and outside the classroom.

Wednesday, February 22

Panel Discussion on Mindset and Motivation

Over the past several years, institutions have worked on how to harness the power and promise of Academic Mindsets to improve the student experience. This session catches up with a few of these activities and looks ahead to where Mindset may lead.

Open Forum on Mindset

There is a tremendous amount of activity and interest in academic mindset across the System. This Open Forum gives you an opportunity to share your work and hear the efforts of your peers on this area. As the University System moves ahead with Mindset, this conversation should be fertile ground for innovation and opportunity.

Open Forum on Motivation

Student motivation has emerged as an area of interest for students affected by the Pandemic. This Open Forum makes room for consideration of the many factors that are driving student shifts in motivation and discussion on how to address them.

Thursday, February 23

Panel Discussion on Data and Technology

The rapid growth in a wide range of technology and tools for learning has created new opportunities to understand and support learners. This session dives into two disparate approaches – the use of LMS data to inform assessments and student supports, and the use of AI chatbots to support students in a high-enrollment course.

Data is at the heart of the planning and priority setting for Momentum. This Open Forum is an invitation to share how you are using data in your class, department, school or institution to shape learning, the student experience, and success.

Open Forum on Technology

The role of established and emerging technology on campus is perhaps as exciting, and fraught, now as it has ever been. From the application of artificial intelligence to support students to the challenges and opportunities posed by ChatGPT and other tools, technology is shaping the campus and our students. This Open Forum is an opportunity to review and reflect on this change and share experiences in harnessing it to advance students.

Panel Discussion on Pathways

Institutions across the state are digging deep into their programs of study to understand how the complexity and connections embedded in the pathways students are provided impact student success. This conversation will delve into efforts to deploy Curricular Analytics (a highlight of the 2022 Momentum Summit) and Co-curricular pathways to improve outcomes and deepen the college experience for all students.

Open Forum on Pathways

Pathways can help to structure choices and minimize missteps for students in their course selection, as well as help to frame  and sequence the experiences and opportunities the benefit and accelerate students throughout their lifecycle. This Open Forum provides a space to discuss what these pathways look like, what may be missing from current pathways, and how to make pathways for the wide range of students on our campuses.

Our final Open Forum is an open conversation on the future of Momentum and student success. Bring your thoughts to share about the past week and what you want to see happen as the University System continues to develop a deeper understanding of how to support all students in their academic journey.
