Data for Advising Symposium

On March 1, Complete College Georgia hosted a symposium “Data Analysis for Advising” at Gordon State College’s Nursing and Allied Health Sciences Building.  The symposium featured remarks from Tom Sugar, Senior Vice President of Complete College America, as well as an opportunity to share experiences with colleagues from across the state.

The workshop-format event built on Complete College America’s Guided Pathways to Success and the Lumina Foundation’s Beyond Financial Aid and explored strategies for advisors, institutional researchers and others to collect and analyze data to strengthen advising practices. This workshop provided institutional examples of data collection and analysis, effective approaches to establishing relationships between advisors and institutional researchers, as well as practical ways to inform decision making.

Advising Policy Review

Policy 3.9 Academic Advisement in the Policy Manual and Section 2.7 Academic Advisement in the Academic and Student Affairs Handbook are the focus of the policy review. The changes reflect the need for clarity on the definition of academic advising and guidance on best practices, but remain broad enough to allow for institutions to customize and maintain advising programs that fit their campus structure and student needs.

Many students need help to identify an appropriate degree program and remain on track to complete their post-secondary credential. Proactive advising provide meaningful, credible, timely support to students on selecting a program that will meet a student’s academic and career goals and provide support when they become off track in their program. The role of advising with relation to student success cannot be underemphasized.

As a primary point of contact for students on campuses, academic advisors are responsible for developing lasting relationships with students to help them navigate college and graduate. Professional advisors, faculty, and even other students serve as advisors at USG institutions, working to provide accurate, appropriate, and timely information to students as they progress through programs of study. In recent years, changing needs among students and new technology have influenced the role of advisors and highlighted a need for additional skills within the profession.

Southwest Georgia Regional Meeting

The Southwest Georgia Regional CCG meeting was held on April 18, 2016 at Valdosta State University. In addition to the host institution, participants included administrative and faculty representatives from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, Albany State University, Bainbridge State College, Columbus State University, Darton State College, Fort Valley State University, Georgia Soutwestern State University, and Middle Georgia State University

Advising Discussion Notes - Southwest Regional Meeting

Advising was among three shared areas of interest for participants at the Southwest Georgia CCG Regional Meeting held at the Valdosta State University on April 16, 2016. Brief notes from the breakout conversation on this issue at the meeting follow:

Metro Atlanta Regional Meeting

The Metro Atlanta Regional CCG meeting was held on April 4, 2016 at Atlanta Metropolitan State College. In addition to the host institution, participants included administrative and faculty representatives from Clayton State University, The Georgia Institute of Technology, Georgia State University, Gordon State College, Middle Georgia State University and the University of West Georgia.
